The Zags on ESPN

Sean Mallon, my personal favorite Zag this season. Largely because he doesn’t sport a pornstache. I’m looking at you Morrison.

Update: For the many people who hit this through Google—it’s pronounced Gon – za – gah.

One of the drawbacks of going to Mexico is having to watch Gonzaga basketball on ESPN. (On a TV powered by a generator no less!) I will admit that my prior relationship with the network is based solely on hear-say; most of my sports watching comes courtesy of FOX Sports Channel or KHQ. ESPN’s reputation is what one would call suspect, and that’s how I approached it when I was forced to watch the last two Zags games.

Turns out that hear-say isn’t always untrue.

Here’s the thing: If you still pronounce Gonzaga “Gon-zah-gah,” dub Spokane “Spo-cane,” and call Raivio “Rah-vee-oh” then maybe, just maybe, you should consider another venture than sports broadcasting. The Zags are (at least at the time of writing) ranked number eight in the country. They have been AP ranked for something close to two years consecutively. They have the longest home field winning streak in the nation. They probably have the best forward in college basketball. So maybe it’s time for Mr. ESPN broadcaster to check his basic Gonzaga 101 before going on air?

Just throwing it out there.

Only one comment? Is that all we're good for?
